集美组,1992年创立于广州,是一家综合性的设计工程机构,现拥有建筑行业建筑工程甲级(联合体)、建筑装饰工程设计专项甲级、建筑装修装饰工程专业承包二级资质。近30年间,集美组已发展成为集规划设计、建筑设计、景观设计、室内设计、艺术陈设设计、标识导向设计、家具设计制作、工程施工、项目管理于一体的行业翘楚,项目遍及海内外,囊括酒店、地产、商业与办公、市政与文化,以及大型公共艺术等。

林学明 (Sherman Lin),集美组设计机构联合创始人,被誉为广州室内设计的奠基人和创始人,深受新中国第一代设计教育家的影响。作为中国室内设计领域的传奇人物,林学明亲历了中国室内设计的发展,是设计界备受尊崇的前辈。改革开放初期,摸索在教学中理论结合实践经验,开创了产、学、研结合的新型设计教学,为国内设计院校教育探索提供可借鉴的模式。三十多年来,林学明带领的集美组设计团队闯南走北,设计作品无数,荣获国际、国内设计大奖无数。

作为设计行业的领导者,“领先”对您意味着什么?
As a leader in the design industry, what does 'leadership' mean to you
领先意味着压力。我虽然说是属于这个行业的开拓者之一,特别是在八十年代开始,八十年代、九十年代我都冲锋在前,确实是给设计行业带来了一定的推动的作用,这是其中之一。但是作为一个领先人物他只是走在前面而已,他最大的压力是后继者、后面带动的团队,他们要超越自己。我要接受他们超越我的这样的一个事实,我也要激励他们去超越我,同时我永远也是走在前面的一个开拓者,这是双重的一种压力。
Leadership means pressure. Although I am one of the pioneers in this industry, especially in the 80s and 90s when I was at the forefront. Indeed, I’ve promoted developments of the design industry. However, the leading figure is just walking ahead of the others. His biggest pressure is from the younger generation. They will definitely surpass him. I need to accept the fact that they will surpass me. And at the same time, motivate them to surpass me. Meanwhile, I will always be a leading pioneer. This is a dual pressure.

您是中国第一代的室内设计师,早在80年代就进入了设计这个行业。那当初是什么样的契机让您选择了设计作为自己的职业呢?
我是1982年毕业于北京中央工艺美术学院。毕业后我就分配到广州美术学院当教师。那个时候,其实还没有室内设计这个专业。我在学校读书的时候,我接受的教育也是以艺术为主的。当时我们的老师,雷圭元先生、庞薰琹先生、郑可先生,他们都是中国老一辈的设计教育家。他们是从法国留学回来的,二、三十年代出国留学回来的一些老先生。我们只能从他们那里掌握一些,学到一些,了解到一些西方现代主义设计教育的一些情况。
I graduated from Academy of Arts&Design, Tsinghua University in 1982. After graduation, I was assigned to teach at The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. At that time, there was no interior design major. During my study, my education was mainly focused on art. Our teachers, Leiguiyuan, Pang Xunqin, and Zheng Ke were all Chinese first design educators. They studied in France in the 1920s - 1930s and came back to the homeland. We learned western modern design from them.
改革开放以后,广东处在改革开放的前沿,很多外资企业进来,很多外商投资。当时的社会经济就非常的蓬勃和发达,而且需要设计这方面的人才的介入。当时我记得广州白天鹅宾馆和北京香山饭店,这两个设计中,广州白天鹅宾馆是由美国的HBA工作室设计的,北京的香山饭店是由贝聿铭先生设计的。这两个项目对我的影响非常的大。
Guangdong was at the forefront in the reform and opening-up. Many foreign-funded enterprises came in and there was a lot of foreign investment. The economy was very prosperous and needed talented designers. I remember Guangzhou White Swan Hotel and Beijing Xiangshan Hotel. Guangzhou White Swan Hotel was designed by HBA. Beijing Xiangshan Hotel was designed by I.M. Pei. These two projects had a significant impact on me.

它给我开拓了什么是室内设计,室内设计的边界,它的专业范围是什么。这样的一个实际的案例,对我的启发是非常非常的大。有这样的一个社会的经济的发展的背景,有这样的一种契机,给我充满了一种对行业、对室内设计的一个信心。
They taught me what interior design really is, its boundaries and professional scope. As practice cases, their inspiration for me was significant. Based on the background of social and economic development, it gave me confidence in the industry of interior design.
从那开始,我就开始向广州美术学院申请成立能够对外承接设计任务的这样的一个工作室。当时得到了校领导的支持,我们成立了广州美术学院室内设计研究中心。这样的话,我们就开始了产学研一体的教研工作室。从84年开始,我正式进入了这个行业。
Then I applied to The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to establish a studio that could do real projects. With the school’s support, we established The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Interior Design Research Center. So we opened an integrated studio that combined practice, academics and research. In 1984, I officially entered the industry.

您曾经发表过一本自传,书名叫作《不知天高地厚》,这是一个很有个性的名字,好像也透露出了一些您的人生态度。您可以和我们分享一下吗?
那是2005年的时候,我是去四川西藏交界的高原上面去采风。那时候真是不知天高地厚。我那时候在高原上患严重的肺水肿,严重的高山不适的症状,差一点就没命回来,就死在山上。那个是属于我对自然不够敬畏,对高原生活的一个无知。所以我的书的名字就叫《不知天高地厚》。
That was in 2005 when I went on a field trip to the highlands on the border between Sichuan and Tibet.At that time, I was really ignorant and reckless.I suffered from pulmonary edema and had severe symptoms.I almost died due to my lack of respect for nature and ignorance of highland life. That's why I titled my book '不知天高地厚'.
那实际上是我的一些平时写的笔记,我把那时候的那种穿越生死的心情写出来,目的是要提醒我们,我们要敬畏自然,要敬畏生命。
Actually, they’re some notes I wrote daily. I wrote down my feelings about life and death to remind us to respect nature and life.

您除了是一位非常成功的设计师,您也是一位艺术家,那您是如何看待这个文化艺术和设计之间的关系呢?
As for my current state, my design work cannot be separated from artistic thinking and creation. My art cannot be separated from the inspiration and influence received from my design.
I believe art and design should not be separated, as they are inherently together. Art is a continuous source of inspiration and passion. It can influence one's design work and provide nourishment. Design faces and serves the society.
In a sense, it’s physical. They cannot be clearly distinguished and they have a mutually influential relationship.

回首过往的众多作品, 您印象最深的项目是哪一个?
For me, the most memorable project is Chimelong Hotel. Our task was to deliver an over 230,000 sqm hotel in two years. Including planning, architectural design, interior design, landscape, art works, and furnishings in two years. The client needed to open the hotel in two years, which was a huge challenge for us.
While domestic cognition of hotels is still based on business hotels, we designed a primitive and wild animal-themed hotel in the urban context. Whether we could bring benefits to the market and society, whether we could bring economic benefits to the company, was a very big challenge for us. In this challenge, I believe we succeeded.

As a designer, we are not just dealing with form. We are dealing with lifestyle. Our responsibility is not only to design a specific case but to promote the development of a society and industry. So this project is the one that gave me the greatest feelings. And also gave the deepest impression. The joy of this success will stay in my heart forever.

您作为前辈,有什么给我们年轻设计师的建议吗?
Always maintain your curiosity. Be open to and learn new things. Curiosity will keep you in a learning state.Especially with the advancement of AI technology now. I really like ChatGPT. I spent one night using it and have fallen in love.In the future, the design industry will be greatly influenced by science and technology. Therefore, we should use AI as a tool to enrich our knowledge and skills.
