您是怎么克服的呢
You have been working and living in China for some years, for sure, there would be a big challenge for living in another country which is not the one you get used to, can you tell us what kind of challenges you ever met and how do you deal with it
是的,我从 2009 年开始在中国工作和生活。其中最大的挑战是沟通和文化理解。我花费了几年的时间学会说中文,理解中国的工作方式。当我达到一定水平时,我可以创造符合客户需求的设计,并且很好地融合当地文化与国际视野。
Yes, I have been working and living in China since 2009. Certainly one of the biggest challenges is the communication and culture understanding. It takes several years to speak the language and understand the way to work in China. After achieving some level it is possible to create a design that fits the client needs and combine the local culture with the international global world.

我喜欢看书,看各个时代的电影,最近的和经典的。影视这种艺术表达,涉及所有感官,也包含历史和文化。小说和幻想对设计师来说也很重要,因为我们在为未来创作。通过观看纪录片和电影的方式可以扩展想象力,了解我们社会的过去,畅想未来。
旅行是一种可以体验空间4 个维度,将地方与人联系起来的方式。理解当地的技术、材料、颜色、生活方式、食物、气味和质地。一切都与设计息息相关,学习和理解的最佳方式是亲眼目睹。因此,只要时间允许,我会尽可能的去环游世界。

您学于智利大学、早稻田大学,
是怎样的契机下来到中国,
并且在北京设立了艾奕空间设计有限公司(AE Architects)?
是的,故事有点长,所以我尽量简短回答。在南美洲智利,智利大学是我们的国立大学。学生时代,我们都梦想被智利大学录取。它拥有这个国家最悠久的历史和传统,拥有最好的师资。成为其中的一员是一种荣誉,也是一个从各个专业了解世界的绝佳机会。后来日本建筑及其当代建筑师吸引了我。智利大学毕业后,我申请了日本教育部的奖学金,并且被早稻田大学建筑学院录取连读硕博。

After 6 years in Tokyo my PhD Chinese classmate invited me to join his design studio firm newly opened after his return to Beijing, China. I accepted as a challenge to meet the biggest country in Asia and to practice architecture and design in an always evolving and developing society which was already back in 2009 leading the world in many aspects.
在中国工作了几年后,我觉得是时候成立自己的设计工作室,更好地将我在西方与亚洲受的教育结合起来,寻找一种独特的风格来服务社会。
After a few years working in China I felt it was a right time to set up my own design studio and better combine my western education experience with Asian education, looking to develop a unique style to serve the society.

What do you think about the impact of western culture on Asian architecture And what about the impact of Chinese architecture to the world
我认为西方文化主导了 20 世纪,从这个意义上说,它在世界范围内扩大了影响力,不仅在建筑方面,而且在生活方式、交流和文化方面。二十世纪末的互联网时代和领先的技术使世界全球化,影响着我们所有人,包括亚洲。现在我们正面临一个新时代,二十一世纪初的重大事件包括纽约市双子塔袭击、全球经济危机以及最近几年的疫情改变了我们的社会和世界。
I think the western culture dominated the 20 Century, in that sense it expanded their influence all around the world, not only in architecture but also in life style, communication and culture. The Internet era and leading technology by the end of 20 Century made the world global, influencing all of us including Asia. Now we are facing a new era, big events at the beginning of 21 Century from the Twin Towers attack in NYC, the global economic crisis and recently the pandemic years changed our societies and the world.

In your architectural practice in China, what challenges have you encountered, and what kind of experiences or important achievements have impressed you the most
每一个新项目都是一个新的挑战。由于我们在全国各地开展业务,从中国北方到最南方,人与文化变化多端。我们的使命是理解这些地方差异,灵活创造一个不仅国际化而且与当地环境和气候密切相关的解决方案。我们使用现有的材料和技术,理解当地的工艺,以确保获得最佳和合理的结果。例如,适合香港或广东的东西可能不适合东北或西部。这是我们通过多年的实践和经验习得的。
Every new project is a new challenge. Since we practice all around the country, from north of China to the very south, the people and culture also change. So our mission is to understand those local differences and be flexible enough to create a solution that is not only international but also well connected with the local environment and climate. We try to use the materials and technology available, also understand the local craft in order to ensure the best and reasonable result. For instance what might fits in Hong Kong or Guangdong may not be ideal for North East or West. This is something we learn through the years of practice and experience.

I think that architecture is a service; the greatest value of designers is to put themselves aside and devote to the mission of creating the best environment for a particular situation, to help people’s dreams come true.
每个项目都是最大的挑战;每个客户都将他或她所有的关心、梦想、计划和幻想投入到项目中。无论是 10 平方米还是 80.000 平方米,我们把同等的精力和爱投入到每一个项目中。
Every project is the biggest challenge; every client put all his or her care, dreams, plans and illusions in every single project. No matter 10 sqm or 80.000 sqm, we devote to each project with the same energy and love.

I think year 2020 is a turning point in many ways, globally and individually. Suddenly we had to face ourselves and the closest people around us, had to share indoor life for many months, and after finally able to enjoy public life again we realized that the world had changed. Globally some societies were more able than others to organize and control the emergency, those societies are somehow leading now the recovery. We as designers have to consider the balance with nature, the value of the indoor spaces for people and families and the concept of home, which is now stronger than ever.

在您的生活中是否也出现了很多变化和挑战?您是如何应对这些的呢?
我认为 2020 年在许多方面都是一个转折点,无论是全球还是个人。突然间,我们不得不直面自己和身边最亲近的人,不得不在室内困住生活好几个月,当我们终于能够再次享受公共生活后,我们发现世界已经变了。在全球范围,有些社会拥有更好的能力组织和控制紧急情况,这些社会正引领着现在的复苏。作为设计师,我们必须考虑与自然的平衡,室内空间对人们和家庭的价值,以及现在比以往任何时候都更强烈的家的概念。

谈谈您对“领先” 的理解
How do you define the word 'leading' in the design context
引领自我是先锋、前卫的代名词,是不断更新和研究未来的代名词。我们不能只重复以前做过的事情,相反,我们应该理解历史和我们自己,然后足够激进地创造新的东西。没有 100% 的全新创造,而是将我们职业永恒的规则和原则与新的挑战结合和重新创造。我们建造不仅为今年,而是为未来 30 年。一座建筑可以屹立数十年,我们的社会正在迅速变化和发展。那我们的建筑如何激发后代甚至影响变化呢?
Leading to me is synonymous of pioneer, avant-garde and to a continuously updating and researching for the future. We cannot just repeat what has been done before, instead we should understand the history and ourselves, and then be radical enough to create something new. There is no a 100% new creation but a recreation and combination of the eternal rules and principles of our profession with the new challenges. We don’t build for this year only but for 30 years ahead. A building can stand decades and our societies are rapidly changing and evolving. How our architecture can inspire the future generations or even influence the changes

I like the work of Dong Gong in China, since I am very attracted by the power of the materials through light, the power of the openings on a surface or wall, the power of the space itself. I admire Louis Kahn and Mies Van der Rohe, the fathers of modernism despite they are different there is a common line, the idea of the time, the idea of the silence, one space can take you through time, transport you to the past or future, bring you vividly old memories, a good space can make you nostalgic or confident, optimistic or introverted, etc, so a leading design or a Masterpiece is the one that transcend the time.

Recently I’m working on mobile architecture and media architecture. Considering the recent events in the world, to be flexible is now more important than ever. Also the society has changed, the generation born after 2000 is totally different, the way they interact with each other’s and with the surroundings is something we should understand. Our lives already move from the analogue world to the virtual one until the extreme of melting them together. So our architecture should interact in similar way, changing the heavy preconception of a building with a flexible and interactive one, able to attract the new generations. The way we use the energy should also change, making the buildings more Eco and environmental friendly. Making the structure and construction process more open and easier to understand, including the community in the process. Then our buildings could be easier to install and implement them in a shorter time with a faster respond to the society needs.

Suggestions for the younger generation in the design industry. Especially for architects students.
真正成功的设计师是把所有的爱都投入他们从事的事情上。这不是想成为百万富翁或拥有非常舒适放松的生活的职业。如果有这样的期盼,最好成为一名银行家或在岛上过着非常简单的生活。
A truly successful designer is the one who put all their love on what they do. This is not a career someone should choose to become a millionaire or to have a very comfortable and relax life. If so better to be a banker or to have a very simple life in an island.
对于学生,我建议他们做任何事都要全心全意,相信建筑可以改变世界并影响几代人。相信我们的使命是通过设计服务和帮助社会。责任重大,需要我们作出最大的努力和奉献。我更觉得我们应该乐观,积极,跳出问题找到解决方案,我们应该享受我们的工作和赋予设计幽默元素,笑口常开是人类的一重大价值。
To the students I would recommend to put their heart in anything they do, to believe that architecture can transform the world and influence many generations. Also to believe our mission is to serve and help the society through design. Is a high responsibility and demands our greatest effort and devotion. I also think we should be optimistic, positives and find solutions out of the problems, we should enjoy what we do and design with humor, to be able to laugh is a great value of humanity.
