Since 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) has celebrated World No Tobacco Days on May 31, to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease related to its use. This year’s focus is bringing attention to the tobacco industry’s attempts to attract youth, and keeping young people tobacco-free and helping them successfully quit for good.
According to WHO, more than 8 million people die every year from causes related to tobacco use. Across the globe, children are using e-cigarettes at rates higher than adults; globally an estimated 37 million youth aged 13-15 years use tobacco in all forms. In the U.S., 22.2% of U.S. middle and high school students (6.21 million) reported ever using any tobacco product; 10.0% of students (2.80million) reported current use of any tobacco product in 2023.
Join us at 18:30 on May 30 at the Beijing American Center. Experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration will talk about what the U.S. is doing to reduce tobacco use among youth from different perspectives. In addition, we will have a doctor from the Beijing United Family Hospital to share his experiences and resources available to help reduce tobacco use among youth in China.
Scan the QR code to RSVP. Let’s speak out and work together to prevent the initiation of tobacco use among young persons and help young tobacco users quit!
