QUESTIONS ABOUT YOURSELF
What is the relationship between design and life in your daily routine (* How do you think about the ‘work-life-balance’)
Space affects all of us. We are bound by space in every aspects of life whether we’re working, sleeping, playing, and etc. Our work is to design and build spaces for people with different purposes. It is impossible to do so without understanding who we are as human-beings and relating to the kind of life that we live. The way we live our lives become the spaces we build. The spaces we design become the lives that we live.

Beside your design career, do you have any other interests or hobbies that you would like to do in your spare time
I enjoy going to see art exhibitions from time to time. I personally think artists play one of the most important roles in current contemporary society. They provoke the status quo through critical perspectives of seeing and exploring new ways of expressing abstract concepts. We often learn and draw inspirations from encounters with artworks or artists. We were fortunate to have the opportunities to work on museums and art centers. It is always an intriguing process to think of the relationship between artworks often objects and their exhibitions in space.

QUESTIONS ABOUT WORK AND PROJECT
Does any triggers that bring you to China, move your base and start your business here
There were never a specific trigger or pre-planned move. I made decisions that appeared to be the better choice throughout different steps of my life. They weren’t necessarily the best choices that I had originally planned or imagined. I never thought of starting my office in China. I didn’t grow up or go to school here. I just lived life in the way it made the most sense to me. One thing led to the other and I came to realization that I had set up a design studio and basically settled in Beijing.

Local culture often being considering as design core, merging into the elements, that’s explain objects’ stylish and unique. What do you think are the biggest similarities and differences between Eastern and Western designs
I grew up in the US to a Korean family. Now I have lived and worked in China over ten years. Perhaps due to my upbringing, the East and the West are not so clearly divided as black and white. These cultures exist in my mind as gradients of different shades of grey. For me, the often-used concepts of being “local” or “international” is not that critical. We consume and internalize information everyday through the massive network. We are instantly influenced by everything that we see, receive, and send. Perhaps the most local is the most international.

What is your most impressive one among all the projects you have made in China(built or unbuild)(* any inspiring/striking story)
X Museum is probably the most memorable project. Not only because it was our first museum project, but it was also designed and built during the most serious COVID times of early 2020. Half of our team couldn’t make it back to Beijing following the spring festival that year. Construction stopped many times due to changing local restrictions. We went to the site almost every other day because there weren’t much else to do. The entire city felt strange as it was not operating in the way it used to.

What ‘s your belief and basis in design What kind of living belief and basis you intend to tell people via design
One of my basic belief in design is persistence. Every project from the first day to the end, they are essentially series of countless problems to overcome. They will push you and test you to the very edge of wanting to give up. You will constantly face rejections and situations that are outside of your boundaries of control. I believe our work is meaningful because behind the outer surface there are these traces of struggle present. I hope that it will remind us to see that having beauty in life is about having patience and tenacity.
QUESTION ABOUT CURRENT ISSUES
Over the course of 2020 to 2022, we have seen examples of human life shifting gears, enormous differences and challenges come without notice, can you tell us what kind of challenges/problems you ever met and how do you coped with it
During pre-covid times, most of us put effort to grow by increasing exchange. Growth naturally meant increasing densities, reducing distances, and blurring boundaries. Now we are in times to consider slowing growth to build resilience and to find appropriate balances and distances. It is challenging as a lot of the projects we work on are also less stable than before. However fortunately, it affects us less comparably as we are a small team. Keeping the team small allows us to adapt quicker to the fast changes in these unexpected times.

QUESTIONS ABOUT IDD
How do you define the word 'leading' in the design context
For me, leading in design context is about having a sense of responsibility. Design and construction always come with much risks and liabilities. There is often lack of trust in the industry. So we draw lines of division, which prepares for us to avoid responsibilities in advance and perhaps even to blame others. I believe the true meaning of leading is to embrace and to build trust. It means to take risks to go against the stream and to challenge the status quo. It is about having a certain sense of leadership willing to take upon more responsibility.

QUESTIONS ABOUT FUTURE
What kind of topics or fields that you plan and wish to explore in the future
Curiosity is what drives us forward. New challenges excite me. I would love to explore new areas where we haven’t been before. We’ve done mostly small to large scale renovation projects in metropolitan cities as Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou. It would be interesting to explore landscapes in rural settings or even completely different scales of furniture or even products.

Any suggestions for the younger generation in the design industry
I still consider myself a young architect that is learning and growing everyday. I may not be in the position to give such advice. Combining the answers above could perhaps be a list. Understanding people before understanding space, seeing culture from your own perspectives, having persistence, building resilience against unexpected changes, having a sense of responsibility, and having curiosity to fuel you to explore unknown territories.
