QUESTION ABOUT YOURSELF
It must be sure that athletic career has enriched your design in terms of every aspect, could you tell us how does it impact on your design You are keen on design sustainability, does it also inspire by your sporting life
My career as a professional rugby union player has certainly enriched the way I design stadiums and training facilities. To experience first-hand how stadiums are used and to experience the atmosphere and sense of theatre that great stadiums and arenas create from the perspective of a player has given me a certain insight to try and achieve this with the venues and events we design at POPULOUS.
My sporting career also afforded me the privilege to travel the world but with this travel I was able to witness some the impacts of climate change, particularly through parts of Africa and the Pacific. Now as an architect I’ve been inspired by these experiences to look at ways we can design sports infrastructure to not only reduce their impacts on the environment but also contribute positively to the places and communities in which they sit.
QUESTIONS ABOUT WORK AND DESIGN
POPULOUS is renowned for the design of sport and entertainment destinations, what is the main design philosophy behind much of POPULOUS' design process How did it come about
The POPULOUS design philosophy is about creating places that draw people together and designing places where people love to be together. Our philosophy is a human centric one where we believe great architecture connects emotionally to the users and where we strive to deliver unforgettable experiences for the people that use our buildings.
This philosophy came about from our understanding through observation and experience that great events are actually about the people who take part in these events; the fans, the performers and even people managing the events so our focus needed to be on them and specifically how do we keep these people wanting to come back to our buildings again and again.
Client is at the center of everything, how do you approach a project How do you get deeper understanding of client’s needs/standards/values Maybe give us a recent POPULOUS example
Our approach always starts with the client, a strong relationship with the client is critical to the success of a project. Where we can, we try and embed ourselves with the client to observe, ask questions, to understand their needs and importantly understand their culture.
An example of this is where we worked with Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) on the redevelopment of KL Sports City in Malaysia. The brief called for the redevelopment of the National Stadium, National Aquatic Centre and National Hockey for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games but working together with MRCB we came to understand the project was about much more than just creating new venues but about revitalising the city. The result has been not just the creation of world class venues for the 2017 Southeast Asian Games but a year round liveable sports city focused on community, wellness and liveability.

What is your most impressive one among all the POPULOUS projects you have ever made (any built or unbuild) (* any inspiring/striking story)
The project I’m most proud of is the work I’m doing now on the revitalization of the Sydney Olympic Stadium (POPULOUS designed the original 110,000 seat stadium for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and then the reconfiguration of the stadium in 2003 to 83,000 seats). This stadium is a venue very close to my heart with Sydney being my hometown I was lucky enough to attend the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and be part of the 110,000 capacity crowd at the stadium, 3 years later as a professional rugby union player, I had the privilege of playing at the stadium in the Rugby World Cup final for Australia against England (unfortunately we lost to England in overtime!) then in 2011 I played my last professional rugby game at the stadium in front of family and friends. Now 11 years later I have the privilege to be leading the team commissioned with the revitalization of the stadium for the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup, the 2027 Rugby World Cup and 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

You led the design of Commbank Stadium, the first stadium in the world to receive LEED V4 Gold certification. How could the design and construction of the sports building maximize green sustainability and reduce carbon emissions, while meeting the dual requirements of hosting events and environmental protection
The two key things we did at Commbank Stadium was looking to build less and focusing on the community (in event and non-event modes). By looking to build less we reduced embodied carbon, maximized natural ventilation and sunlight and reduced the construction impacts on the site and neighborhood. Our focus on the community meant we activated the public faces of the venue by integrating playgrounds, basketball courts, public amenities and cafes into the fabric of the building, we gave back green space to the adjacent parklands and sourced the majority of the building materials locally while diverting over 90% of the construction waste from landfill through recycling and re-use. As a general philosophy in the sustainable design of sports and events venues I think we always need to look to do more with less to reduce our environmental impact while looking at how our buildings can be part of the community both on event and non-event days to maximize their use and useability.

Many large stadiums are built for the purpose of hosting events or activities, but the needs of the people in the area where the stadium is located are ignored and not really integrated into the daily life of the local community. Can we change this through pre-design, so that the venue can better serve the community and become a center for people to interact and connect with each other
Definitely. As designers of city scale infrastructure we need to understand not only the need to integrate these venues into the wider city but also the local community. A key part of this is bringing the local community into the design process from day 1. For Commbank Stadium we commissioned a number of studies (led by a local university) asking the community what they would like to see integrated into the stadium for use on non-event days. From this study we included kids playgrounds, half court basketball courts and exercise equipment into the side of the stadium facing the street while increasing the publicly accessible green space to the side of the stadium facing adjacent parklands.
We also noticed that POPULOUS recently collaborated with PWR to launch the world's first metaverse concept esports venue “PWR Facility”. What led to the birth of this work Would this project inspire and guide the way for the future of stadium design and development
The PWR metaverse facility has been an exciting collaboration with Lachlan Power and the PWR team that came about through a shared philosophy around our approach to training facilities and Esports and their desire to test this in the metaverse before building anything physically. After more than 250,000 people visited and interacted virtually with the facility in the first 2 weeks we definitely see this approach of building ‘metaphysically’ before a physical building as a way to allow teams, spectators and importantly building owners & operators test and experience the building before the final design is completed. Additionally with the improvements to Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) headsets we think there are opportunities for venues to extend the reach beyond to the physical spectators in the stands to the millions of people watching the events at home.

QUESTION ABOUT CURRENT ISSUES
Over the course of 2020 to 2022, we have seen examples of human life shifting gears, enormous differences and challenges come without notice, can you tell us what kind of challenges/problems you ever met and how did you cope with it
As designers of sports, events and social infrastructure we were particularly hard hit by the impacts of the pandemic as professional sporting competitions stopped, conventions and exhibitions moved online, and airports closed. However after most of the world went into lockdown in 2020 we quickly moved into working strategically with our clients to assist them in making their venues and events as safe as possible for when health authorities allowed the phased re-opening of cities. Not only did this bring us closer to clients in understanding their buildings, their needs and drivers but also opened our eyes about how we could make our venues safer and more efficient than they had ever been before. Being a global company with offices in over 20 cities around the world the pandemic also taught us how to stay connected with staff and clients through technology.
QUESTIONS ABOUT IDD
How do you define the word ‘leading’in the design context
I would define ‘leading’ in design as being able to inspire others. A leading designer may not have all the answers but inspires others to follow down the path they have started.
Can you recommend a couple of “leading” design projects or “leading” celebrities in the industry that we can learn from
Three design projects that come to mind in the sports and event space that are leading the industry:
Zaha Hadid Architects new 5,000 seat timber stadium for the Forest Green Rovers Football Club in the UK as the first example of a significant sports venue designed predominantly with timber.
Fenwick Iribarren
Fenwick Iribarren Architects 40,000 seat Qatar World Cup Stadium 974 in Doha using 974 shipping containers as part of a modular design that will dissemble after the event is complete.
POPULOUS’ 17,000 seat Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle that will be the first zero carbon and zero waste arena in the world.
QUESTIONS ABOUT FUTURE
What kind of topics or fields that you plan and wish to explore in the future我感到十分兴奋的是我们目前正在探索的两个领域。
I’m most excited by 2 areas we are currently exploring. The first is aviation and rail. With our focus on creating extraordinary experiences for people we are being asked more and more to apply these same principles to transport design where ‘spectator experience’ is replaced by ‘passenger experience’. Globally as rail and aviation sectors continue to grow this will be an exciting area to be in.
The second is the metaverse. The PWR collaboration showed us there is a new generation of people just as willing to experience a building in the metaverse as they are in the physical world and with the quick development times and normal rules of gravity, site constraints and construction budgets not applicable in the metaverse we see this as an exciting area of development for POPULOUS.
Any suggestions for the younger generation in the design industry *Especially for architects student.
Stay curious as inspiration and innovation can come from anywhere, never stop learning and follow your passions.
