Chapter One: Breaking New Ground · 

A Fifty-Year Dream Chaser in the Exhibition Industry

1978年，中国刚刚踏入改革开放的第一年。展览，这个词对于大多数人来说还很陌生。

但有人选择踏入这片几乎空白的领域，开启了一段漫长的逐梦之旅。

In 1978, China had just stepped into the first year of its reform and opening-up. Back then, the term "exhibition" was still unfamiliar to most people.

However, some individuals chose to set foot in this nearly untapped field and embarked on a long journey in pursuit of their dreams.

1978年，改革开放元年，当兵出身的王明亮（以下尊称：王董）正式进入国际展览行业，亲身经历行业的从无到有。80年代中期，上海引领中国的国际经贸展览会的发展，那个时候比较多的是国家型的展览会：比方说美国机场展览会、瑞士钟表展、意大利工业设计展等等。王董正是在此机遇下，踏上五十载的逐梦之路。进入到80年代中后期，各种各样的多国国际性的展览会，开始在上海发展。到90年代，就是另外一阶段了。

In 1978, the first year of China's reform and opening-up, Mr. Mingliang Wang, a former serviceman, formally entered the international exhibition industry and witnessed the industry's evolution from scratch. In the mid-1980s, Shanghai took the lead in the development of China's international economic and trade exhibitions. During that period, most exhibitions were national-level ones, such as the U.S. Airport Exhibition, Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie de Genève (SIHH), and the Italian Industrial Design Exhibition. It was against this backdrop of opportunities that Mr. Wang embarked on a 50-year journey in pursuit of his dreams. In the late 1980s, a variety of international exhibitions involving multiple countries began to thrive in Shanghai. The 1990s marked yet another new phase of development for the industry.

1992年，王董创办了上海华展国际展览有限公司 。作为首个民营企业，主办国际经济贸易展览会。1998年，与当时全球最大的展览公司Miller Freeman（亚洲总部叫亚洲博闻），在上海共同成立合资展览公司，分别取“华展”和“博闻”的“博”和“华”，叫：上海博华国际展览有限公司，这是中国首家由对外经济贸易部批准成立的外资合作展览企业。

In 1992, Mr. Wang founded Shanghai Sinoexpo International Exhibition Co., Ltd. As China’s first private enterprise to host international economic and trade exhibitions, the company blazed a new trail in the industry. In 1998, it joined hands with Miller Freeman—the world’s largest exhibition company at the time (whose Asian headquarters was known as UBM Asia)—to establish a joint-venture exhibition company in Shanghai. Notably, this marked China’s first foreign-cooperative exhibition enterprise approved by the Chinese Foreign Economic and Trade.

他不止于见证，更在于躬行——让中国的展览舞台，真正与世界同频共振。

He did more than just witness the industry’s growth—he dedicated himself to action, striving to make China’s exhibition stage truly resonate with the world.

90年代，中国改革开放进一步深化，并取得显著成就。开始大量引进国际先进技术装备，提升了中国制造业的效率和技术应用的发展，展览会在引进技术方面，起到了一个非常重要的作用。

In the 1990s, China’s reform and opening-up further deepened, yielding remarkable achievements. The country began to introduce a large number of advanced international technologies and equipment, which boosted the efficiency of China’s manufacturing industry and advanced the application of new technologies. Exhibitions played an extremely important role in facilitating the introduction of such technologies.

进入到21世纪初的时候，这些进口的设备对中国制造业的整体发展起到了关键性的作用。中国制造，在纺织机械、轻工、电子工业，包括家具日用消费品、纺织品等等都和展览会息息相关。展览会最重要的一个部分就是展示先进的设备、最新的产品、卓越的设计。所以，这个对市场开放，特别对供应链的发展起了一个举足轻重的作用。

By the early 2000s, these imported devices had become crucial to the overall development of China’s manufacturing sector. "Made in China"—spanning textile machinery, light industry, electronics, furniture, daily consumer goods, textiles, and more—was closely tied to exhibitions. A core function of exhibitions is to showcase advanced equipment, the latest products, and outstanding designs. As such, they played a pivotal role in opening up markets, particularly in driving the development of supply chains.

当然，上海的展览业迄今为止，应该是全球规模最大、产业门类最全、辐射能力最强的。因为上海辐射全中国，同时也辐射全世界，这就是展览会的重要作用。各届政府对展览业都有非常清醒的认识，通过展览带动经济贸易的发展。

Today, Shanghai’s exhibition industry stands as the largest in scale, the most comprehensive in industrial categories, and the strongest in radiating influence globally. This is because Shanghai’s reach extends not only across China but also to the rest of the world—a key value of exhibitions. Governments at all levels have long had a clear understanding of the industry’s importance, leveraging exhibitions to promote economic and trade growth.

王董深耕在会展领域40多年，近50年的时间，躬身前行至今，前无“古人”，更盼来者。

Mr. Wang has devoted over 40 years—nearly five decades—to the exhibition industry. He has forged ahead with dedication to this day, a pioneer with no predecessors in his path, yet he earnestly looks forward to inspiring successors.

面对当下的经济环境，许多历经风雨的企业家也感到了前所未有的迷茫与焦虑。作为中国会展行业的拓荒者，王董在行业从无到有、由弱变强的征程中，他穿越了无数个经济周期。当被问及如何度过这段充满挑战的时期，又对后来的企业家有何建议时，这位会展行业领袖，给出了一个掷地有声的回答——

Facing the current economic environment, many entrepreneurs who have braved innumerable challenges also feel an unprecedented sense of confusion and anxiety. As a pioneer in China’s exhibition industry, Mr. Wang has navigated countless economic cycles throughout the industry’s journey from its infancy to maturity. When asked how to get through this challenging period and what advice he has for the next generation of entrepreneurs, this leader in the exhibition industry delivered a resounding and unwavering answer:

信 心！

其实在我觉得成功的企业家最重要的一个方面是信心！

信心比金子更金贵！对未来的发展之路要有信心。

Confidence!

In my view, confidence is the most crucial trait for a successful entrepreneur. Confidence is even more precious than gold—we must have faith in the path of future development.

王董：博华在2000年的时候收购了一个酒店展览会，当时只有1万平方米的规模。经过20年的努力，酒店展览会已经达到100万平方米。从酒店餐饮、酒店用品和酒店客房，扩展到酒店餐饮加酒店建筑装饰，再发展到酒店建筑装饰再到酒店、商业、办公、公共空间；这整个发展思路是我非常重要的一个经验——就是不断增长的一个发展思路！

In 2000, Shanghai Sinoexpo Informa Markets acquired HOTELEX (a hotel exhibition), which then covered a mere 10,000 square meters. After 20 years of efforts, this exhibition has expanded to a scale of 100,000 square meters. Its scope has evolved from hotel catering, hotel supplies, and hotel guest rooms, to include hotel catering plus hotel architectural decoration, and further extended to encompass hotel, commercial, office, and public space sectors. This entire development trajectory represents a crucial experience of mine—a mindset centered on continuous growth.

王董：小平南巡讲话提到：发展才是硬道理。

博华在2023年制定了一个十年倍增计划，这个倍增计划是在疫情刚过时提出的。那么，现在这个市场不太好、经济有点低迷。但，这个时候一定要有这个信心啊。这个信心，是对未来中国的经济长期可持续的发展的信心。中国现在的GDP是人均是12,000美元，放长远看，未来十年或者15年的时间，我们的GDP可能就是到达2万美金，或者是24,000美元人均，这个市场就大一倍啊。就眼前的困难，其实是这个短期的，长期的发展才是可持续的！我觉得其实关键就是两个字就信心！

Mr. Xiaoping Deng emphasized in his southern tour speeches: Growth is the absolute principle.

In 2023, Shanghai Sinoexpo Informa Markets formulated a 10-year doubling plan for its development. Notably, this plan was made right after the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the current market is not in a good state, and the economy is somewhat sluggish. But in fact, this is exactly the time when we must have confidence. This confidence is based on the fact that China's economy will achieve long-term and sustainable development. China's current per capita GDP is approximately 12,000 US dollars. China's current per capita GDP is approximately 12,000 US dollars, or perhaps 15 years, for our per capita GDP to reach 20,000 US dollars, or even 24,000 US dollars per capita. By then, the market scale will double. The difficulties we are facing now are actually short-term, while long-term development will be sustainable. In my view, the key actually lies in one word: Confidence!

摩天筑梦 · 

心中那群攀登高峰的人

Chapter Two:

 Dreaming of Skyscrapers · The Peak-Climbers in His Heart

在王董的记忆里，有一些建筑的身影，与展会的舞台一起，刻进了他的职业生涯。对建筑师这个职业，他也有着自己特别的理解。

In Director Wang’s memory, the images of certain buildings—alongside the stages of exhibitions—have been etched into his career. When it comes to the profession of architects, he also holds a unique understanding of his own.

" 对建筑师：我崇拜！"

这个崇拜之情，是发自心底的。

“Architects: I admire them!”

This feeling of admiration stems from the bottom of his heart.

王董：早期的展览会都在这个上海展览中心（前中苏友好大厦）举办，那个时候，看着波特曼的酒店和办公公寓楼群项目一点一点建成起来了。这个时候，深刻感受到：建筑师的想象力可以如此丰富。那么小一块地方，波特曼酒店“螺蛳壳里做道场”，进入酒店的感受到的是一个完美的艺术品。那个时候，我对建筑师非常的崇拜！

In the early days, all exhibitions were held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Back then, I watched as the Portman hotel and office apartment complex took shape bit by bit. It was during this time that I deeply felt just how boundless an architect’s imagination could be. On such a small plot of land, the Portman Hotel was like "creating a grand stage in a tiny conch shell"—the moment you stepped inside, you were greeted by what felt like a flawless work of art. Even to this day, I still hold immense admiration for architects because of that experience!

王董：50岁开始，王董开始打高尔夫球，那个时候在浦东陆家嘴高尔夫练习场。练了大概一年有余，金茂大厦开始拔地起高楼 ( 高尔夫练习场也没有了)。整个金茂大厦的建造速度很快，落成封顶后再见到，哇，又是一件艺术品！建筑师/设计师，这是一批非常睿智、知识渊博，组织管理条理性也很强的一群人。这么大体量的项目，从方案到落成，全是他们心血的结晶啊。所以，我是很崇拜的！

Starting from the age of 50, Mr. Wang started to play golf, practicing at the Pudong Lujiazui Golf Driving Range back then. After practicing there for over a year, the Jin Mao Tower began to rise from the ground—and the golf driving range was gone as a result. The Jin Mao Tower was built at an impressive speed; when I saw it again after its topping-out ceremony, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Wow, this is another work of art!” Architects and designers are a group of people who are extremely wise, knowledgeable, and highly organized in management. For a project of such a large scale, every step from the initial design scheme to the final completion is a crystallization of their hard work and dedication. That’s why I hold such deep admiration for them!

王董：我家住在北外滩，当城市夜景灯光打开的刹那，看到陆家嘴的鳞次栉比的高楼群体，回想当年：小平南巡讲话后，朱镕基当市长的时候，提出来上海浦东的发展要一年一个样，三年大变样。现在都浦东确实做到了。作为上海人，我也非常自豪。上海吸引一大批优秀的建筑师，来自于全国乃至全世界各地的顶尖的建筑师，他们将浦东的农地、工厂厂房、民宅基础上快速的建成一个媲美美国纽约曼哈顿的这样一个建筑群体，现在全世界的客人到上海来打卡，这是我们建筑师了不起的成就！

I live in the North Bund area. The moment the city’s night lights are turned on, I look out at the row upon row of high-rises in Lujiazui. It makes me think back to the past: after Mr. Deng Xiaoping’s Southern Tour, when Mr. Rongji Zhu served as Shanghai’s mayor, he put forward the goal that Pudong’s development should "take on a new look every year and undergo a dramatic transformation in three years." Today, Pudong has truly lived up to that vision. As a Shanghai local, I feel extremely proud. Shanghai has attracted a large number of outstanding architects—top-tier professionals from across China and even around the world. Based on Pudong’s former farmlands, factory buildings, and residential houses, they quickly built a cluster of skyscrapers that can rival Manhattan in New York, USA. Now, visitors from all over the world come to Shanghai to visit these landmarks. This is an extraordinary achievement by our architects!

第三章

跨界交响 · 

当展览遇见建筑

Chapter 3: 

A Cross-Boundary Symphony · When Exhibition Meets Architecture

展览是舞台，建筑是作品。

一个为行业提供视野，一个为城市创造形象。当两者相遇，会发生怎样的故事？

An exhibition is a stage, and architecture is a masterpiece. One offers perspectives to the industry; the other shapes the image of a city. What kind of story will unfold when these two meet

王董：“建筑”这两个字，应该在八几年的时候，我在贸促会和新鸿基展览公司，就组织了一个建筑和工程机械展览会，后来我们又举办了建筑装饰展览会，同期还有家具展览会。

The term "architecture" first came into my professional orbit back in the 1980s. During my tenure at the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and Sun Hung Kai Exhibition Company, we organized a Construction Machinery Exhibition. Later, we went on to host an Expo Build China, and around the same period, we also held a Furniture China.

王董：从建筑师、到房地产开发，还有博华一年一度在举办的四大空间展览：酒店、商业、办公、公共空间。这4大空间，把博华展览和地建师受众群体非常好的结合起来，这种结合是寻寻觅觅，从80年代中期，到去年参与了第十届CREDAWARD地建师设计大奖的颁奖盛典，有这么一个机缘，使博华/使我个人能够真正的进入到以建筑师这个群体，与建筑师这个群体共同合作，携手共进。打造这四大空间，是一个非常有挑战性的事件。

From architects to real estate developers, there are also the four major space-themed exhibitions that Shanghai Sinoexpo informa Markets hosts annually, focusing on namely hotel, commercial, office, and public spaces. These four types of spaces have enabled Shanghai Sinoexpo informa Markets to connect exceptionally well with the audience of DJSER. This connection was not achieved overnight—it was a long journey of exploration. Dating back to the mid-1980s, and up until last year when we participated in the 10th CREDAWARD Ceremony, it was this serendipitous opportunity that allowed Shanghai Sinoexpo informa Markets, and myself personally, to truly engage with the architect community, collaborate with them, and move forward hand in hand. Building these four major space-themed exhibition sectors is an incredibly challenging endeavor.

王董：去年9月，我和红点奖创始人/主席Prof. Dr. Peter Zec谈到要我们一起合作的家具设计金点奖再延伸扩展到建筑装饰金点奖。地建师设计大奖是一个媒介，我们要一起拓展到更深的一个领域。最近，我们也确定要一起打造上海国际建筑节，这个节庆是展览、颁奖、论坛等多种活动。可能，这对上海来说也是第一次引进这么样一个组合，我觉得对我们来说都是一个挑战。

Last September, I discussed with Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, founder and chairman of the Red Dot Design Award, the plan to extend our co-launched Gold Idea Design Award · Furniture to cover Gold Idea Design Award · Architecture. The CREDAWARD serves as a medium for us to expand into a deeper field together. Recently, we have also confirmed our collaboration to create the Shanghai International Architecture Festival, which will integrate multiple activities such as exhibitions, award ceremonies, and forums. This kind of integrated event is likely the first of its kind to be introduced to Shanghai, and I believe it presents a challenge for all of us.

王董：希望有更多的建筑师能够参与到这个三个不同类型的活动：论坛、奖项、展览当中。相互合作，摩擦出灿烂的火花！

We hope more architects will participate in these three distinct types of activities: forums, awards, and exhibitions. By collaborating with one another, they can spark brilliant ideas!

三线并进 · 

共绘行业新篇章

Chapter Four: 

Three-Pronged Advancement · Jointly Paving a New Chapter for the Industry

从敬意到合作，从展台到作品，他与建筑师并肩走向更广阔的舞台。

From respect to collaboration, and from exhibition booths to refined works of art, he stands side by side with architects to step onto a broader stage.

2025年，拾一纪 | 第十一届CREDAWARD地建师设计大奖，颁奖典礼与博华首次牵手为行业呈现；

金秋九月，第一届中国建筑装饰金点奖以及在筹备中的第一届上海国际建筑节；

三位一体，三个活动联动是一个利益共同体，博华与建筑师、设计师们，甚至业主方一起，多方协作，共同受益。

In 2025, 11TH CREDAWARD is jointly organized by DJSER and Shanghai Sinoexpo Informa Markets.

This September, the first edition of China Gold Idea Design Award and first Shanghai International Architecture Festival in preparation.

These three events form a tripartite synergy—a community of interests. Shanghai Sinoexpo Informa Markets, architects, designers, and even developers will collaborate for mutual benefit.
